I don't know when our friendship changed. There wasn't a big fight or some dramatic moment where everything fell apart. We just slowly stopped talking as much. Life got busy, we got older, and somehow months started passing between conversations.
The strange thing is that I still think about them all the time. I'll see something that reminds me of them and want to send a text, but then I stop myself. I think, It's been too long. It would be weird now. So I don't send it.
I don't even know if they miss me. Maybe they don't. Maybe they've moved on and I'm the only one still holding onto a friendship that doesn't really exist anymore.
Sometimes I want to tell them that I miss them. I want to tell them that I miss the version of us who could talk for hours about absolutely nothing. I miss having someone who knew all the little details of my life without me having to explain them.
But I don't know how to say that without making things awkward. So I say nothing.
Maybe that's the part that hurts the most. There was never really a reason for us to stop being friends. We just stopped trying at the same time, and neither of us was brave enough to be the first person to say, “Hey, I miss you.”
I don't know if I'll ever send the message. But I hope they know that somewhere along the way, I never stopped caring.
